How Do I Organize a Voter Registration Drive?
1. Contact the Board of Registrars Office in the county where your campus is located and make them aware of your interest in holding a voter registration drive. They can provide you with information to organize a registration drive.
2. Although Georgia no longer requires individuals holding voter registration drives to become deputy registrars, the Secretary of State’s Office recommends that a deputy registrar be present at your drive. YOU can become a deputy registrar. Please contact your county Board of Registrars Office for further information.
3. Obtain Georgia voter registration forms, which can be provided by your county registrar.
4. Make sure that your voter registration drive doesn’t offer any freebies. Georgia law prohibits any benefit or “reward” (such as balloons, candy, school credits, etc.) from being provided in exchange for registering to vote or voting.
5. Ask the county Board of Registrars Office for information on how to properly store the completed voter registration forms. Also, make arrangements with your county elections office to drop off the completed registration forms, preferably by the close of the next business day. At the very latest, the registration forms should be returned not later than 10 days after an applicant has signed the application.
6. Be creative with your table! Decorate it with bunting, balloons, and/or signs encouraging people to “Register to Vote Here.” But remember NO campaign material of any type is allowed to be displayed on or around the table.
7. Make sure you have all the necessary supplies for the voter registration drive, such as pens, clipboards, forms, and volunteers.
8. Don’t be shy! Have some volunteers standing with clipboards and registration forms in-hand, ready to ask passers-by if they are registered to vote.
9. Have fun! You are helping the citizens of Georgia fulfill one of their most important civic responsibilities.
