Licensure Information

1. WHAT INFORMATION AND/OR REQUIREMENTS ARE NECESSARY TO SUBMIT AN APPLICATION FOR THE WRITTEN EXAMINATION?

  • Applicant must submit application, fee, form F to the Board. No more than 30 days later the Board must receive the Doctoral Transcript, Form A, and 2 Forms E to be presented to the Board for approval.
  • To take the EPPP exam early, please send the Early Exam application, Fee, Doctoral Transcript, and letter from Training Director 


2. WHAT WRITTEN EXAMINATIONS ARE REQUIRED?

  • A passing score on the National Licensing Examination (EPPP) 70%, 140 or more out of 200 items.
  • A passing score on the closed book Georgia Jurisprudence Examination covering the current laws, rules, regulations and general provisions (70%.)


3. WHAT IS REQUIRED TO OBTAIN A RENEWABLE 2-YEAR LICENSE?

  • Satisfactory completion of the educational requirements (APA-approved school after 1/1/2000, except for foreign graduates.)
  • Satisfactory completion of the internship.
  • Satisfactory completion of the Post-Doctoral Supervised Work Experience or in the process of completion
  • After the above documents are verified, an Oral Examination is scheduled [Note: Board Rule 510-2-.06]
  • Passing the Oral Examination results in the issuance of a License to Practice Psychology for a 2-year period of time [License will expire on December 31 of the even-numbered year] if all requirements are met.


4. WHAT IS CONSIDERED AN ACCEPTABLE INTERNSHIP?

  • Completion of an APA Internship.
  • If not APA-approved — Must be completed in no less than 11 months and no more than 24 months after its inception. Will consist of 2000 hours of organized training experience appropriate to your academic program specialty area. Intern must spend 500 hours in direct contact with patients. Intern must have completed 60 quarter hours of graduate work in Psychology prior to the inception of an internship. 80% of internship supervision must be by one or more psychologists. You are designated as an INTERN or RESIDENT.


5. WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS OF A POST-DOCTORAL WORK EXPERIENCE?

  • The Post-Doctoral Supervised Work Experience (SWE) must include 1500 hours consonant with the Fellow’s academic problem specialty and Internship.
  • Establish a written contract with the Supervisor prior to its inception which specifies the work experience goals, its content and the criteria for ensuring the quality and quantity of the Fellow’s work. The Fellow will forward a copy of the written supervision contract to the Board within 30 days of its origination. The SWE must be completed in no less than 11 months and no more than 24 months after its inception. The Fellow must spend at least 500 hours in direct contact with the patient involvement, defined as including direct patient contact, document review, test scoring, note/report writing or any other professional activity which directly relates to the treatment of or services provided for the client/patient The Fellow and Supervisor must meet individually to discuss cases at least one hour for each 30 hours of SWE. After completion of the SWE, the supervisor will attest to the adequacy of the experience and supervision on a Postdoctoral Supervised Work Affidavit Form.


6. HOW DO I RENEW A LICENSE TO PRACTICE?

  • It is imperative that you keep the Board office informed of any name or address changes, as they occur, so that your renewal notice can be mailed to you. The Board sends one renewal notice, usually 6 weeks prior to the expiration of your license.
  • The renewal period runs from January 1 of the odd-numbered year to December 31 of the following even-numbered year.
  • Complete 40 hours of continuing education (including 3 hours ethics, 3 hours psychopharmacology.)
  • You must report on your renewal application in writing, under oath, the number of continuing education hours you have completed. Random audits are used for verification and then you must submit CE documentation.
  • No conviction of an undisclosed felony or other violation of the law.


7. HOW DO I QUALIFY FOR A PROVISIONAL LICENSE?

  • A Provisional License is available to an applicant who is in the process of completing the SWE. The license is granted to an applicant who has passed all written examinations and completed all other requirements for permanent licensure except for the SWE.
  • The Provisional License will expire in 24 months or upon the granting of the permanent license. It is not renewable. Applicants are restricted to the stipulations of the SWE requirement.


8. HOW CAN I OBTAIN A TEMPORARY LICENSE?

  • A Temporary License is only available to applicants for licensure by endorsement (persons who currently hold a license in another jurisdiction who apply on that basis.)
  • The holder must take the written examination on the first date administered after the application is submitted.
  • The holder must take the oral examination on the next available date after passing the written examination.
  • The Temporary License is valid for only 12 months and is not renewable.
