Board Policies

03-02    All materials required to satisfy the application requirements will be submitted to the board by the applicant in a single package, and received prior to the published deadline. (effective 2/5/02)

03-03    A maximum of six months of Co-op experience may be granted by the board for experience prior to graduation.  (effective prior to 2000)

03-05    A maximum of one proctored offering may be extended to any test candidate.  The request for proctoring by another jurisdiction must be sent in writing.  (effective 3/16/04)

03-06    O.C.G.A 43-15-8(3) and 43-15-9(3) applicant’s material will be reviewed by all board members prior to offering the candidates the opportunity to sit for the exam.  (effective 3/16/04)

04-01    Proctoring by another jurisdiction will not be offered to any exam candidate for the initial sitting for any exam.  (effective 3/16/04)

04-02    Out of state residents will only be considered for comity licensing, with the single exception of active military personnel on assignment outside of the state.  (effective 6/2/04)

04-03    No temporary permits will be issued.  (effective 3/16/04)

04-04    O.C.G.A. 43-15-9(4) applicants, once approved, will be extended only four offerings of the PE exam.  If they do not sit or fail all four offerings, any future offerings will require them to be evaluated under O.C.G.A. 43-15-9(1), 9(2) or 9(3).  (effective 5/4/04)

04-06    O.C.G.A. 43-15-9(4) shall not recognize engineering technology degrees. (effective 11/9/04) 

04-07    Once an applicant has begun the process of licensure by 43-15-8(1), 8(2) or 8(3), the applicant must complete the process with one of these three methods.  (effective 11/9/04)

04-08     Every land surveyor-in-training or land surveyor applicant who is qualified to take the fundamentals examination or the principles and practice examination shall be allowed to take the qualifying examination four (4) times. If an applicant fails to pass an examination after four attempts in any jurisdiction, the applicant must take additional courses and obtain two years additional land surveying experience in order to reapply for examination. The applicant must submit to the Board transcripts for the enrollment and completion of six (6) college credit semester hours of college level courses in the applicant’s area of deficiency. The courses shall be bonafide college courses approved by the Board. Board approval of application for considerations under this policy entitles applicant to the next four consecutive offerings.  (effective 8/9/2005)

05-01    Providing property conditions assessments (PCA), inspection reports or any other reports concerning the conditions, adequacy, safe or unsafe conditions, compliance with plans and/or codes of any commercial structure for a client is considered by this board the practice of   engineering as defined in Georgia law section 43-15-2 and persons not registered as professional engineers in the state of Georgia shall be prohibited from performing or offering to perform such services.  (effective 6/2/05)

06-01  In order to satisfy experience and endorsement requirements, Land Surveyor exam applicants who have applied and passed the LSIT exam in Georgia would only need to submit additional experience endorsements covering all experience since they last applied for LSIT and will not be required to resubmit previous endorsements for experience already endorsed through their LSIT application.  Each Land Surveyor candidate will still be required to submit the appropriate application and fee.  (eff. 10/3/06)

06-02    If applicant did not use the four offerings granted for the two year period, (four years for PE Fall Offering examinees), applicant may submit a written request within the subsequent twelve months since his last scheduled offering, to have the missed offerings restored.  After that time, in order to be considered for additional offerings, the individual must submit a supplemental application, to include experience since his last offering, endorsed by the PE who supervised that experience, and the applicable application fee.  In order to be considered for the next scheduled exam, the written request or the supplemental application must be submitted prior to the June 1^st or the December 1^st application deadline.  Applicant will be notified in writing of the Board’s decision.  When applicant has exhausted the four offerings permitted by the Board, he/she must complete requirements in accordance with current Board policy (currently 07-01.). 06-03  As it reads, “O.C.G.A. 43-15-6(b), the board shall waive the continuing education requirement…for individuals over the age of 65 who are engaged in the active practice of their profession who have had a valid active license for the previous 25 consecutive years” shall apply only to registrants who demonstrate 25 consecutive years of valid active licensure in Georgia.  No exceptions. (eff. 12/12/06)

07-01 (to replace 04-05R)    Every engineering applicant who is qualified to take the fundamentals examination or the principles and practice examination shall be allowed to take the qualifying examination four times. If an applicant fails to pass an examination after the four offerings in any jurisdiction, the applicant must take additional courses in order to reapply for examination. The applicant must submit to the Board transcripts for the enrollment and completion of twelve (12) college credit semester hours of college level courses in the applicant’s area of deficiency. For applicants to take the fundamentals examination, such additional courses shall be undergraduate college courses in higher mathematics, basic sciences or engineering. For applicants to take the principles and practice examination, such additional courses shall be upper level or higher course in engineering from an ABET/EAC accredited school. Board approval of application for considerations under this policy entitles applicant to the next four consecutive offerings. At the discretion of the Board, if the applicant has expended his four offerings and failed the exam 2 times or less, the Board may elect to not require the additional education to sit for the next exam offering. (effective 11/13/2007, replacing Board Policy 04-05R)

07-02 (new) All applicants seeking reinstatement of their registration following the license being administratively revoked for having an expired license for greater than 4 years shall be required to pass as a minimum the principles and practices examination, unless the applicant has continued their license in force from another acceptable jurisdiction without interruption and in compliance with current Continuing Education requirements for a licensed Georgia registrant during the time when the Georgia licensure was not active.

10-01(to replace 03-01) 1. Beginning with exams administered in April of 2011, the exam prescribed by the Board for applicants whose experience is structural engineering as determined by the Board, shall be the NCEES Structural exam which consists of two 8 - hour components. 2. a. Comity applicants whose experience is structural engineering as determined by the Board and who first became registered as a Professional Engineer or Structural Engineer in another state on or after January 1 of 2011, will be required to have passed the NCEES Structural exam (totaling 16 hours) or another 16 - hour exam as approved by the Board.  b. Comity applicants whose experience is structural engineering as determined by the Board, who first became registered as a Professional Engineer in another state before January 1, 2011, and who have not passed at least an 8 – hour structural exam approved by the Board, will be required to have a minimum of 60 months of structural engineering experience acceptable to the Board following the pass date of their examination. (effective 12/07/2010 replacing Board Policy 03-01) .

10-02 (New) Graduating Seniors applying for the LSIT under 43-15-12(1)(A) shall be approved to take the test provided that adequate documentation is provided that demonstrates that the applicant is currently enrolled in a course schedule that will result in graduation at the completion of the semester. The LSIT certificate shall not be issued unless the applicant passes the exam and provides subsequent proof of graduation..

10-03 (New) LSIT applicants under 43-15-12(1)(A) shall be approved to take the test and subsequent certification as an LSIT upon producing a transcript that meets the educational requirements of an acceptable Bachelor degree. Experience will not be considered in the review but the required number of references will remain in effect. Board staff may make the determination of the adequacy of the transcript..

10-04 (New) LS applicants by comity under 43-15-16(b) shall be approved for state specific examination and licensure that have demonstrated that their education and experience record meet requirements that are at least as stringent as in Georgia. Board staff may make the determination of the adequacy of the transcript.

10-5 (New)  Structural PE Exam candidates shall be allowed four sittings for each of the two 8 hour structural exams, and within a 5-year period must have passed both exams in accordance with NCEES guidelines.  (Effective 3-8-11)

12-01        Applicants who have graduated in a curriculum accredited by ABET as an engineering technology degree and subsequently graduate in a curriculum accredited by ABET as an engineering degree may follow the more advantageous of the following 2 paths to licensure.

           * Path #1: Experience credit begins from the first engagement after the accredited engineering degree is obtained and the applicant must gain 48 months of experience acceptable to the Board.

           * Path #2: Experience credit begins from the first engagement after the accredited engineering technology degree is obtained and the applicant is awarded 12 months experience credit for the engineering degree and must gain 72 months of experience acceptable to the Board.
