IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING EXAMINATIONS
Beginning October 1, 2009, the Funeral Service Law and Rules Examination will be administered by PSI, a private company administering exams for various professional licenses. Scheduling and payment for exams will need to be made directly with PSI after October 1. More information will be available prior to October 1 regarding contact information for PSI. Access to schedule exams with PSI is not available at this time, but will be available by October 1.
The Professional Licensing Boards Division is not scheduling applicants for exams at this time. We appreciate your patience during this brief interim period. |
The Georgia State Board of Funeral Service is responsible for carrying out the provisions of the Funeral Service Law for the purpose of better protection of life and health, preventing the spread of contagious, communicable, and infectious diseases, and regulating the practice of embalming and funeral directing and the care and disposition of dead human bodies.
The Board consists of seven members who are appointed by the Governor. Six of the members are licensed and practicing funeral directors and embalmers and one member is a consumer member who has no connection with the funeral service industry. The Board is authorized to prescribe a standard of proficiency as to the qualifications and fitness of embalmers and funeral directors, to revoke or suspend licenses for any violation of this law, to adopt rules and regulations and to set standards of sanitation to be observed in the embalming or cremation of dead human bodies. Any person desiring to engage in the practice of embalming or in the business or practice of funeral directing or operating a funeral establishment must first meet the requirements of the law and rules and be licensed by the Board.
Board meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at the Board’s offices in Macon and are open to the public. Persons wishing to bring matters for the Board’s consideration should submit written notification or request to the Board office.
Currently the Board has two inspectors who schedule and perform inspections of licensed funeral establishments to ensure compliance with established laws and rules.
