How Do I Obtain Licensure as a Registered Forester?
General Qualifications. Forester registration is granted to persons who meet the educational and experience requirements and who pass the examination administered by the Georgia State Board of Registration for Foresters.
Educational Requirement. An applicant for forester registration must hold a baccalaureate degree from a school, college, or department of forestry in a curriculum accredited by the Society of American Foresters, or a two-year associate degree in forest technology or the equivalent as recognized by the Society of American Foresters.
Experience Requirement. After completion of a baccalaureate degree in forestry, two years experience under the supervision of a registered forester or under other supervision acceptable to the Board is required. After completion of a two-year associate degree, the experience requirement is three years. An applicant holding a masterís degree in forestry may become registered after one year of experience. All experience must be earned subsequent to completion of educational requirements.
Examination Requirement. Applicants must pass the examination administered by the Georgia State Board of Registration for Foresters with a score of 70 or higher. Educational requirements must be met before applying for the examination.
Reference Requirement. Each applicant for registration must submit five references. If the applicant is a Georgia resident, three of the required references must be from foresters holding a current registration to practice forestry in Georgia.
Endorsement. The Board may waive the examination requirements for an applicant who has been registered for a minimum of five years in another jurisdiction as a registered forester provided that the requirements and qualifications for licensing and registration under the laws of the jurisdiction are substantially equivalent to those of Georgia, and the applicant has been in good standing with the jurisdiction for the entire period of licensure or registration. In order to be eligible for registration by endorsement, the applicant must hold a current registration as a registered forester in another jurisdiction.
