1. How can I obtain a Georgia RN license?
RN licensure in Georgia is obtained through exam, endorsement or by reinstatement.

If applying by examination as a graduate of a GBON approved nursing education program & traditional nursing education program, the applicant must have satisfactorily completed a course of study in a recognized school of registered nursing approved by the Board. A completed application, a fee of $40, an official College transcript, a completed criminal background check and any additional information requested by the Board needed to show eligibility. Register and pay the examination fee in the amount of $200 to the testing service. The NCLEX-RN candidate bulletin can be downloaded at www.ncsbn.org.  You may also register with the testing service online at www.pearsonvue.com/nclex.

If applying by examination as a graduate of a nontraditional nursing education program, the applicant must have satisfactorily completed a course of study for licensure for examination from a nontraditional nursing education program approved by the board, and which program meets the requirements of O.C.G.A. 43-26-7 (e). The applicant must submit the following:

  • A completed application with a fee of $40.
  • An official college transcript from applicant’s LPN nursing education showing clinical training in pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, medical-surgical, and mental illness.
  • An official college transcript of applicant’s non traditional nursing education.
  • A certificate showing completion of program for a paramedic or military corpsman.
  • A completed criminal background check.
  • Any additional information requested by the Board needed to show eligibility.

If applying by endorsement, the applicant must be licensed as a registered nurse in another jurisdiction and must have graduated from a nursing education program prior to passing a licensing examination recognized by the Board as valid for licensure as a RN. The applicant must submit the following:

  • A completed application with a fee of $60.
  • A completed criminal background check.
  • Provide verification of current RN licensure in another state.
  • Provide verification of original licensure obtained by NCLEX-RN in another state.
  • A verification of employment as a RN documenting (3) months or 500 hours of licensed practice as a registered nurse.
  • Any additional information requested by the Board as needed for licensure.

If applying by endorsement and graduated from a nontraditional nursing education program, the applicant must be licensed as a registered nurse in another jurisdiction and must have graduated from a nontraditional nursing education program approved by the Board which meets the requirements of O.C.G.A. 43-26-7 (e) prior to passing a licensing examination recognized by the Board as valid for licensure as a RN. The applicant must submit the following:

  • A completed application with a fee of $60.

If applying by reinstatement, the applicant must do the following in order to be considered for reinstatement:

  • A completed application with a fee of $90.
  • A completed criminal background check.
  • Provide documentation of graduation from a nursing education program within the four (4) years immediately preceding the date of current application and/or a verification of employment from your most recent employer to verify (3) months or 500 hours of licensed practice as a registered nurse.
  • Any additional information requested by the Board as needed for licensure.

2. How can a obtain authorization as an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN)?
Before an individual can practice as a certified nurse practitioner, certified registered nurse anesthetist, certified nurse- midwife, or clinical nurse specialist, psychiatric/mental health, they must possess an APRN authorization from the State of Georgia. To obtain authorization you must complete and submit an application with a fee of $60 and have the following criteria:

  • Active Georgia registered nurse license.
  • Master’s or higher education in area of specialty.
  • Active national certification in area of specialty.

3. How long does it take to receive a RN license after sitting for the examination? To ensure fairness to all applicants, all applications are reviewed in the order received. If the application documentation is incomplete, an email is sent to the applicant notifying them of the deficiencies.  You can track your application status at www.galicensing.org. Your application is subject to Board review if you answered yes to any legal/discipline question. Once all official results from the examination section, Board office review and submitted documentation are received you will receive a license number.  Once your license has been issued, it will be available on the website at https://secure.sos.georgia.gov/myverfication/.  The license will be sent directly to the official mailing address provided by the licensee.

4. I took the exam days ago. Can you tell me if I passed? When will I receive the results? Your examination results will only be mailed to your address of record. Notify us immediately in writing if you have an address change or name change. The name change requires submission of appropriate legal documents.  NO EXAMINATION RESULTS WILL BE GIVEN BY TELEPHONE FROM GEORGIA BOARD OF NURSING. Score results will be mailed approximately (1) one month after the examination only for failing results. A passing score does not ensure licensure.

5. If I failed the NCLEX-RN, what must I do to retake the exam? You must reapply & submit an Application for Licensure by Repeat Exam - US Graduate.

6. What is the time limit for passing NCLEX-RN for US graduates? You must pass the NCLEX-RN within a three (3) year period from the date of your graduation.

7. I have just graduated from nursing school and I am waiting to take the exam. Can I be issued a temporary permit? No temporary permits are issued for graduates. Following graduation, you must not engage in any “licensed” activities or work in any position that requires RN licensure or commence orientation for any position that requires RN licensure until you have received your RN license. Graduate Nurse status is no longer available. 

8. Does the Board have inactive status? The Georgia Board of Nursing does not have inactive status.

9. How do I submit address changes? All address changes must be reported to the Board within 30 days after the move.  The license number, name as it appears on the license, the old address and the new address is required if submitted by mail or fax. Address changes may be submitted by clicking here.

10. I am licensed in another state and will be moving to Georgia. Can I transfer my license? If you graduated from a nursing education program, taken and passed the national licensing examination and are currently licensed in another U.S. territory, you may apply for a licensure by endorsement. The application fee is $60. Please refer to question one (1) for endorsement applicant’s requirements for licensure.

11. How do I obtain another license if lost, stolen or name change? When a license is lost or stolen, you must report it to the Board immediately and request an application for a duplicate license.  Any time your name changes; you must apply for a duplicate/replacement license and submit a copy of legal documentation showing the change (marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order).  A fee of $25 is required to process the application and issue a new license.  The processing time is approximately 7 to 10 business days.

12. What must I do to renew my license?

  • Complete and mail the renewal application or you may renew on-line at this website.
  • Licenses expire January 31st of odd numbered years.
  • Licenses expire January 31st of even numbered years.
  • The renewal fee is $65.00
  • If you fail to renew by January 31st, your license will be administratively revoked and require reinstatement by the Board.

NOTE: THE BOARD WILL NOT MAIL RENEWAL NOTICES.  It is your responsibility to renew your license on or prior to your expiration date.  Paper renewals will only be available by request.  If you need a paper renewal, you may contact the Georgia Board of Nursing at (478) 207-2440.

13. Do I need to submit CE hours to the Board? ONLY those randomly selected for Continuing Education audit must submit proof of their current national certification for APRN authorization along with their renewal application. You will receive specific instructions if you are chosen for an audit.

14. I lost my license. How do I get another one? How long will it take? Is there a fee required? When a license is lost or stolen, you must report it to the Board office immediately and request an application for a duplicate license.  The fee is $25 and the processing time is 7 to 10 business days.

15. I am moving to another state and I need to send you a form to verify my license. Is there a fee? How long will it take? Yes, you must submit a verification of licensure form from the state which you are seeking licensure with a fee of $25.00 (Money order, Cashier’s Check, Certified Check or personal check) to the Board office. The process time is approximately 10 – 15 working business days.

16. I need to take a refresher course. Do you have a list of programs that offer them? Since the Board is involved with a licensing decision which includes completion of a reentry program, the reentry program should prepare the reentry nurse to provide nursing care with reasonable skill and safety to a diverse client population and include clinical assignments incorporating nursing activity associated with acute care environments. A reentry program nursing environment allows for nursing practice as a registered nurse under the supervision of another registered nurse.  

17. How do I obtain a criminal background check? Criminal background checks are required by O.C.G.A. § 43-26-7. The GAPS fingerprint background check process is simple and easy to use. Applicants must register with Cogent Systems prior to going to the fingerprint site. There will be no data collection or registration at the fingerprint collection sites.  Fingerprint services will not be provided to applicants who have not registered.  Registration may be completed online or over the phone. To register online, go to www.ga.cogentid.com. Online registration is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. To register by phone, dial 1.888.439.2512 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. EST.  The data collected from the applicant during the registration process is the same data collected on the fingerprint cards. When registering, the ORI number to use when prompted is GA922931Z.  The Verification Code is 922931Z. 18. Why must I complete a Georgia Board approved preceptorship? Graduates of a nontraditional nursing education program who do not meet the educational and practice requirements as stated by Georgia law O.C.G.A. 46-26-7 will be required to complete a Georgia Board approved preceptorship.  Please refer to the Georgia Board of Nursing website at www.sos.ga.gov/plb/rn under “Download Forms” to review Instructions for Nontraditional Nursing Education Programs Applicants.

19. What is a Georgia Board approved preceptorship?Preceptorship” means a program of clinical experience or practice that is approved by the GBON in which an applicant for RN licensure gains a stated number of hours of clinical experience or practice in a health care facility located in Georgia.  The applicant must be under the supervision of a preceptor who is a GA licensed RN who is: 1. located in Georgia; 2. has a minimum of 18 months of experience in an acute care practice setting; and 3. has no history of disciplinary action with a licensing board. Prior to GBON approval of the preceptorship, a written letter of agreement between the applicant and RN preceptor must be filed with the GBON that: 1. is written on letterhead stationary of the Georgia health care facility; 2. clearly states the location of the preceptorship; and 3. is signed by the RN applicant, preceptor, and a health care facility representative. Successful completion of the preceptorship must be verified in writing from the preceptor prior to licensing.

20. I need to do a preceptorship for clinical experience? Do you have a list of programs that offer them? No. A preceptorship must be arranged by the applicant with a health care facility (acute care “inpatient” hospital).

21. Can I do my preceptorship out of state? No. A preceptorship must be located in the state of Georgia.

22. When can I do my preceptorship? After the completion of the application process, the applicant may submit an application for a preceptorship. Once a proposed plan for preceptorship is approved by the Board, a six (6) month temporary permit may be issued to the applicant. The applicant is expected to complete the preceptorship within six (6) months. Upon receipt of a written request from the applicant and an updated clinical schedule provided by the Agency Coordinator, a temporary permit may be renewed only one time for an additional six (6) month period.

23. Can an applicant by endorsement be issued a temporary permit? Yes. Your completed application with all required supporting documentation including a copy of the Cogent Registration ID number, may qualify you for a 45-day temporary RN work permit. A temporary RN work permit will enable an applicant to work temporarily in Georgia and will facilitate completion of fingerprint requirements in Georgia at a Cogent System-GAPS print location.
           
24. Does a RN temporary work permit expire? A temporary RN work permit is not renewable and will expire 45 days from date of issuance or will become null and void if application information submitted is not supported by criminal background check results.
