1. I am certified by the Board of Certification for Athletic Trainers, do I need a license in Georgia to practice?

Yes. You can not use your certification to practice in Georgia. You must hold a valid license issued by the Georgia Board of Athletic Trainers in order to practice as an Athletic Trainer in Georgia. 

2. I hold a current Athletic Trainer license in another state. Can I practice in Georgia?

No. It is a violation of state law to practice in Georgia as an Athletic Trainer without a Georgia license. You must hold a valid license issued by the Georgia Board of Athletic Trainers in order to practice as an Athletic Trainer in Georgia. 

 3. When will I receive my license?

Once your application is complete and all supporting documents have been received, your application file will be reviewed within fifteen (15) working days. You will then receive your license by mail. If you are not eligible for a license at that time, you will receive a letter indicating the status of your application. Please do not practice as an Athletic trainer in Georgia without a license.   

4. Can I verify issuance of my license prior to actual receipt, or, check on the status of my application for licensure?

You may verify your license once issued, or check on the status of your application from at our website at www.sos.ga.gov/plb/ .     
      
5. I hold a current license to practice as an Athletic Trainer in another state. Can I become licensed in Georgia?

Yes, if the state where you are currently licensed has licensure requirements that are substantially equal to or more stringent than the Georgia requirements. You cannot use your out of state license to practice in Georgia. You must hold a current valid license issued by the Georgia Board of Athletic Trainers in order to practice as an Athletic Trainer in Georgia. This is termed Application by Endorsement or Reciprocity. 

6. How can I change my address?

Address changes will be accepted via US Mail, fax at (478) 207-1434 or on-line at www.sos.ga.gov/plb/trainer/ . 

7. How can I change my name?

Please submit a copy of a marriage license, divorce decree or court order via US mail or by fax at (478) 207-1434.   A copy of your driver’s license or social security card is not acceptable. If you would like a new pocket card, please include your license number and the appropriate fee. You should receive your new pocket card generally within fifteen (15) business days. Please do not send original documents as they can not be returned. 

8. If I lose my pocket card, how can I receive a duplicate?

Please write the Board and request a duplicate card. Include your name, address, license number and the appropriate fee. You should receive your new pocket card within fifteen (15) working days.

9. Are there Continuing Education requirements for Athletic Trainers?

Yes. Forty (40) Contact Hours of Continuing Education (CE) acceptable to the Board. However, an Athletic Trainer who received their Georgia License within one year of the renewal date shall not be required to meet the continuing education requirements for that renewal period.  NOTE:  this applies only if the licensee renews his license.  If the license lapses for failure to renew and must be reinstated, the CE hours will be required.

10. What are the Renewal dates for my license? Does my license expire?

Georgia Athletic Trainer licenses expire June 30 of each even numbered year. Licenses are renewed every two (2) years. You may renew your license during the renewal period either on-line at www.sos.ga.gov/plb/trainer, or by mail (call the Board office at (478) 207-2440 to request a renewal application be mailed to you).  

11. How much does it cost to obtain a license?

Fees are subject to change at the Boards discretion. Please refer to the website www.sos.ga.gov/plb/trainer, click on the “download forms” selection and open the fee schedule for the most up to date cost for licensure. You may also call the Board office at (478) 207-2440 for information. 

12. Is there an Exam I need to take for licensure?

Yes. Applicants for Licensure by Examination will be required to pass the national exam given by the Board of Certification (BOC) for Athletic Trainers; for exam information, please visit their website at http://www.bocatc.org/  .
Those applying for licensure by Endorsement/Reciprocity (see Question #5) may be granted a license without examination to any qualified athletic trainer holding a license in another state if such state recognizes licensees of this state in the same manner.
