A2. Each license type requires a different national exam which requires prior approval by the Board:

• Professional Counselor – National Counselor Exam (NCE), OR, National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE) by National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC)

• Social Worker – Masters Social Work Exam by Association of Social Work Board (ASWB) and Clinical Social Work Exam by Association Social Work Board (ASWB)

• Marriage & Family Therapists – Marriage and Family Therapists Exam by Professional Exam Service (PES)

If you have already taken the national exam required for your profession then you would apply for license by exam waiver. You are required to pay an exam fee for each scheduled exam.

Upon approval by the Board to sit for the exam, you will be notified by e-mail or in writing via the USPS of your eligibility. Eligibility is good for one year from the date of the approval correspondence. Instructions on how to contact the vendor for each examination is on the correspondence.
