Beginning in 1805, Georgia law required marriages to be recorded in the Court of Ordinary, now known as the Probate Court. Generally, marriages are recorded in the county of residence of the bride.

Marriage records for most Georgia counties (except where records were destroyed by fire or other courthouse disaster) are available on microfilm at the Georgia Archives. Marriage records for the following counties are available in the County Records from Microfilm collection of the Virtual Vault:

  • Burke
  • Camden
  • Chatham
  • Effingham
  • Glynn
  • Richmond
  • Wilkes

What if I don’t know the county?
