Oakland Cemetery Book

This book records Confederate soldiers buried in Oakland cemetery between February, 1862 and July 5, 1864. On that date the sexton of the cemetery apparently fled the city, and these records cease before the fiercest fighting around Atlanta, which culminated with Federal troops occupying the city on September 1, 1864.

This book is most useful for providing a date and place of death for Confederate soldiers who died in Atlanta hospitals between February, 1862 and July 5, 1864. It may also be used to locate graves in Oakland Cemetery, but many of the soldiers listed in this book were subsequently moved to new burial locations. Users should contact the Oakland Cemetery Sexton's office for current grave information. (See: Oakland Cemetery).

The book is a transcription made in August, 1884, from the originals, which are now lost.

The book includes:

  • Name index in rough alphabetical order. The Page and Row numbers in these entries lead to the soldier's entry in the hospital listing.
  • Hospital listings for every hospital in Atlanta. These listings provide the names of the soldiers who died in each hospital. The names are in chronological order and include the soldier's unit information. The Row and Number after each name do not appear to correspond to other entries in this book, nor do they correspond to the current cemetery layout.
  • Cemetery Plats listing. These Row and Number entries appear to be location markers within the cemetery, but they do not correspond to the current cemetery layout.
  • Listings by Block and Row Number of soldiers buried in the cemetery.
  • Maps of the Blocks and Rows, which correspond to the current cemetery layout. Users should bear in mind that some reburials took place after 1884.
  • A history of the Atlanta Memorial Association.
